Playa del Carmen Hotels with Free Parking. InterContinental (IHG) Hotels in Playa del Carmen.Barcelo Hotels & Resorts in Playa del Carmen.RIU Hotels & Resorts in Playa del Carmen.Hotels near Hotel Riu Palace Riviera Maya.My husband had considered going with us earlier & we would have had 2 rooms - and I would have requested nearby rooms - very few adjoining rooms available - anywhere. We'll be at Riu Palace Mexico for Christmas/New Years & one of the factors for chosing RPM was proximity to the other Rius. While they were quite a bit younger when we last went to Cancun, I certainly would NOT let them bounce around from resort to resort (as with PDC Rius) if we were in Cancun - even now. In PDC I have a comfort level of giving my teens (now 16 & 18) space to "play" with mom-check-ins. One of the biggest trade offs is that in PDC there are very few beach front rooms (in developing PDC they got smart & didn't build right on the beach - less damage from hurricanes!) - but I think PDC beach is better anyway - or maybe it's just that there aren't the hoards of people that you see in Cancun. ID is required to get into Playacar - taxi drivers have to give a pass when entering & get it back when they leave. Playa del Carmen - while the city is pretty large - most of the AI resorts are located in Playacar - a guard gated community with resorts & homes. There's a main street (5 lanes) with LOTS of traffic - it's not a vacationeers traffic - it's all kinds of traffic (that you don't always know who it is). Resorts in Cancun are all right on the coast and many floors high. I consider Cancun to be Mexico's Las Vegas - sans the gambling - big city lots going on - bumper to bumper traffic - lights - people. so, good luck with that! Edited: 11 years ago Sorry, can't help you with your resort choice at all - never stayed at either one. There's one highway (305?) that runs parallel to the coast but is a fair ways inland (I'd guess at about 1/2 mile or so) - this is how you access all the resorts the vast majority are located between the highway and the ocean. If a person wanted to go into Playa del Carmen, some sort of motorized transportation is necessary (whether that's a taxi, collectivo or shuttle). The all-inclusive resorts along here are totally self-contained they pretty much have to be that way as there is NOTHING else within walking distance. It's worth noting that you won't find high-rise resorts here, there's nothing over three storeys (well, technically Playa del Carmen is smack dab in the middle of the Riviera Maya and it has buildings taller than that but it's not like Cancun). Here's where you'll find lots of all-inclusive resorts (as well as Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplore, Crococun Zoo and many other attractions). I'm not sure of the technical definition but to me, the " Riviera Maya" refers to the area of the coast running from the south of Cancun all the way down to Tulum. Although there are a few all inclusive resorts in or close to town, you'll also find lots of non-AI hotels and condos here too. just off 5th where the prices are generally cheaper. There are also plenty of shops, bars, restaurants etc. The main tourist thoroughfare is 5th Avenue which runs parallel to the beach but a block or so inland. Playa del Carmen is a large town of 350,000 people and is about an hour or so south of Cancun. There are tons of clubs, shopping and restaurants. I've never stayed here but have heard Cancun likened to South Beach, Miami many times. The coast here is shaped like a reverse "7" and there are high rise resorts dotted along it. Cancun is a city it's where the airport is located.
